Empowerment Resources Inc, is a private 501 (c)(3) non-profit organization located in Jacksonville, Florida. The organization is dedicated to the empowerment of youth and their families. It is the mission of Empowerment Resources Inc. to focus on making children and their families stronger while empowering them to become successful leaders in the community today for a better tomorrow. Currently, Empowerment Resources Inc. offers two programs, Journey Into Womanhood and Female or Mother Daughter mini-retreats
In this day in time there are a number of issues that plague teenage girls and their development into womanhood. For many this development can be healthier, as it is nurtured by strong influences from their parents, family members, and other positive figures in their communities. Without positive intercession, this stage of development (puberty/ adolescence) can and often does lead to a lifetime of devastating experiences. Because of this, founder and executive director, Elexia Coleman-Moss created Empowerment Resources Incorporated.
Empowerment Resources Inc. successfully launched its initial program, Journey Into Womanhood, June of 2003. This program has been designed with concepts targeted specifically for female adolescents, and addresses the issues that plague girls and their voyage into womanhood. Journey Into Womanhood promotes leadership development in teen girls ages 12-17 and addresses the real issues youth are faced with today. The sessions include workshops, field trips and community service projects. Topics for the workshops include character development, educational enrichment, etiquette, money management, abstinence, and a parent support group. Some workshops are co-facilitated with local community agencies and business leaders.
Mini-retreats are a great introduction to Journey Into Womanhood or great for individual select topic workshops. Upon completion of the retreat, participants should have a sufficient understanding of self and community to ensure the emotional, social, spiritual and physical survival of our families and communities. The retreat is a great idea for women's groups, youth groups, social organizations or for a "girlie" getaway!
Participants from the various programs have had the opportunity to attend college tours, have training in etiquette, raise money for breast cancer and have had the opportunity to hear celebrities such as Dr. Cornel West and Alecia Keys speak. “As a founding participating mom, JIW (Journey Into Womanhood) has been phenomenal. It is the type of program all mothers should want their daughters participating in. It teaches them leadership skills, conflict resolution, becoming a young lady and skills to further their education. I want to say thanks to the program director, for giving time to help our girls become young ladies that will give back to the community” says Carolyn Ballou, Parent from the Journey Into Womanhood Program.
Mrs. Coleman-Moss is determined to make Empowerment Resources Inc. a building block in the re-building and designing of our communities’ next leaders.
